How do we prevent online gender-based violence through youth work?
At the Centre for Digital Youth Care we are to help answer this question in the new menABLE project, which is already off to a good start. In cooperation with the project's other European partners, we will develop educational material that, in an easily accessible and experimental way, stimulates young people to reflect on gender-based violence online.
Gender-based violence online covers many different types of behavior. It may be girls who are harassed or excluded when they game – solely due the fact that they are girls. It can also be people with gender identities that differ from the majority and are therefore humiliated or threatened online. There are many examples, but they all have in common that the negative behavior is primarily or partially motivated by the victim’s gender.
As part of the prevention of gender-based violence online, we at the Centre for Digital Youth Care, together with a number of project partners, are developing teaching material targeting 13-18-year-olds. The ambition is to create material that, in an easily accessible and experimental way, invites young people to discuss and reflect on what constitutes gender-based violence online and the consequences that follow from it.
For us, the project is part of a broad focus at the Centre for Digital Youth Care on how to best work with the target group of young men who, due to dissatisfaction, end up reacting outwardly online. Our wish is to develop teaching material that can help all young people, but especially boys, to better identify, express and deal with emotional imbalance. We already work with teaching materials about digital culture and well-being, so through menABLE we will provide both independent material and a strengthened input into the already existing efforts.
menABLE is supported by the EU Commision and is carried out in collaboration with the European Schoolnet (EUN) from Belgium, Child Focus from Belgium, and the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH) from Greece. When the project is completed at the end of 2024, the teaching material will therefore be available in a number of other languages in addition to Danish.
